Synopsis: The rapid growth of the nanotechnology industry and subsequent proliferation of nanoparticle types present the need to rapidly assess nanoparticle toxicity. My work at AFRL involves using a newly established nebulizer based method of delivering nanoparticles to Drosophila melanogaster to rapidly and cost-effectively screen a large number and variety of nanoparticles for toxic effects. The nebulizer method will then be adapted to a mammalian mouse or rat model. Nanoparticles identified as highest priority by the Drosophila screening method will be delivered to the respiratory system of the mice and assayed for toxicity.
