Former Fellows

Fellows whose Fellowships began in 2009:

Name: Angela R. Connell
Agency: Center for Army Leadership
School: Kansas State University
Program of Study: Ph.D., Psychology (Industrial/Organizational)
Synopsis: I am reviewing and determining the relevance to Army leadership of several stories. These stories, most of which are nonfiction, are one way to convey what Army leadership should look like and to motivate leaders and their subordinates to meet and exceed the standard. Stories that are selected will be added to library of exemplars that convey the lessons of Army leadership as outlined in FM 6-22, Army Leadership. I will also be writing a review of the literature on organizational and strategic levels of influence - planned actions that are intended to change the beliefs, attitudes, and or/actions of others. The ability to influence is critical for Army leaders, especially considering the extent to which Army leaders today interact with civilians and foreign nationals.
Dates: Start: 08/2009 End: 07/2010

Name: John W. Freimuth
Agency: Defense Manpower Data Center
Division: DMDC - East
School: The Catholic University of America
Program of Study: M.A., Psychology
Synopsis: As a Consortium Research Fellow I assist in quality control and construction of surveys at the DMDC. I am also receiving training in SAS and data-compiling software for future projects. Most of the surveys I am currently working on examine gender issues, harassment, and sexual assault within reserve military personnel.
Dates: Start: 02/2009 End: 05/2010

Name: Seth A. Kiser
Agency: U.S. Army Research Institute for the Behavioral & Social Sciences
Division: Arlington Research Unit, VA (Basic Research)
School: The Catholic University of America
Program of Study: Ph.D., Psychology (Applied Experimental)
Synopsis: I am working with Dr. Psotka examining definitions of intelligence utilizing Consensus Based Assessment (CBA) theory. This body of work attempts to explore definitions of intelligence by identifying interactions between cognitive consistency,
self-awareness, as well as political beliefs and personal values. The purpose of this research is to expand general knowledge tests to recognize a more complete range of cognitive ability.
Dates: Start: 08/2009 End: 06/2010

Name: Marisa M. Lee
Agency: Defense Manpower Data Center
Division: DMDC - East
School: George Mason University
Program of Study: M.A., Psychology (Industrial/Organizational)
Synopsis: I currently work in the Personnel Survey Branch assisting primarily with quality control and data entry on current surveys regarding voting patterns and sexual assault response.
Dates: Start: 02/2009 End: 05/2010

Name: William D. Miller Jr.
Agency: Air Force Research Laboratory/Human Effectiveness Directorate
Division: Warfighter Interface Division
School: George Mason University; University of Dayton
Program of Study: Ph.D., Psychology (Human Factors & Applied Cognition); B.S., Psychology (2010), B.S., Exercise Science (2010)
Synopsis: I assist with development and implementation of experimental paradigms used to test and manipulate the cognitive workload of pilots. This typically entails the creation of a MATLAB or other computer language script that allows accurate and precise control of the variables of an experiment so we can get a true gauge of how hard individuals are working and where their work threshold is; in essence, how much work can they be given before they begin to be overloaded and lose effectiveness.

Other duties include analysis of psychophysical metrics collected in the above experiments. The psychophysical metrics collected from these experiments include faceLab eye-tracking data, electroencephalography (EEG) data, heart rate data collected in conjunction with the EEG data, and performance measures. I am responsible for the analysis of the eye-tracking data, the EEG data entry and some rudimentary EEG analysis, the individual's heart rate variability, and the subject's performance data as they pertain to the subject's workload. This data is immediately analyzed after an experimental run and compared to the analyses of all previous subjects on an up-to-date basis, so that as the experiments are completed, our lab can start to see trends and interpret the results from early on in the experiment.
Dates: Start: 11/2009 End: 08/2010

Name: Karl D. Pfeiffer
Agency: Defense Manpower Data Center
Division: DMDC - West
School: Monterey Peninsula College
Program of Study: A.A., Graphic Design
Synopsis: As a Research Assistant in the change management department, I keep track of changes to programs produced here at DMDC West. I typically keep the Management System up to date, while also notifying the developers and the others of the changes being tracked. This greatly streamlines the release process and can often help when a program fails.
Dates: Start: 01/2009 End: 01/2010

Name: J. Brian Robinson
Agency: Defense Manpower Data Center
Division: DMDC - East
School: George Mason University
Program of Study: M.A., Psychology (Industrial/Organizational)
Synopsis: As a Consortium Research Fellow at DMDC I assist in organizing IRB protocols and helping with Civilian, Active Duty, and Quick Compass surveys. In addition to these, I am also working on creating briefing products, reviewing tab volumes, and producing survey notes. In the future I will be helping with special analysis and special data requests.
Dates: Start: 08/2009 End: 08/2010

Name: Aaron M. Sagan
Agency: U.S. Army Research Institute for the Behavioral & Social Sciences
Division: Orlando Research Unit, FL (Technology-based Training)
School: University of Central Florida
Program of Study: M.S., Modeling & Simulation, Human Systems Track
Synopsis: I am researching the use of video games as a method of training infantry. Special importance is placed on areas such as feedback, fidelity, and situational awareness. I assess performance and progress within virtual environments with the goal of helping to develop efficient training methods for the dismounted Soldier.
Dates: Start: 02/2009 End: 12/2009

Name: Heather N. Stroupe-Smith
Agency: U.S. Army Research Institute for the Behavioral & Social Sciences
Division: Fort Knox Research Unit, KY (Unit Training)
School: Western Kentucky University
Program of Study: M.A., Psychology (Industrial/Organizational)
Synopsis: I am currently working with Dr. Carl Lickteig on a company visualization training tool for the Army. The training tool is an instructorless, multimedia, interactive product for training visualization skills in today's challenging environment. Technical objectives include developing parallel pre- and post forms for the training tool to determine whether change in performance from the pre- to post-test is a function of learning, establishing normative standards of company-and-below visualization performance that distinguish novice, intermediate, and expert levels of visualization skills, and examining the training effectiveness of the training tool. To accomplish these objectives, my other tasks include data collection, data analysis, reporting, and researching test design.
